初の大規模個展「田名網敬一 記憶の冒険」の開幕を記念し、その60年以上にわたる創作活動を知る国内外の識者を迎えた国際シンポジウムを開催します。

MoMAやシカゴ美術館、M＋（香港）にも作品が所蔵され、国内外のファッションブランドやミュージシャンとのコラボレーションも増加するなど、近年特に再評価が進む田名網敬一。1957年に日宣美展で特選を受賞して以降、デザインと美術、両方の分野で活躍を続けてきたアーティストの多様な側面を捉えながら、今なぜ田名網の作品が見直され、注目されているのか、その真相に迫ります。
大阪大学大学院人文学研究科教授でありポップ・アートに造詣が深い池上裕子氏、京都造形芸術大学での田名網の教え子であり美術作家として活躍する束芋氏、この夏に田名網に関する短編を上梓した小説家の朝吹真理子氏を会場に招き、さらにライデン大学助教授で日本の実験映像の研究者であるジュリアン・ロス氏（オランダ在住）をリモートでつなぎます。本シンポジウムは現在の田名網敬一を捉え直す貴重な時間となることでしょう。

国際的に高い評価を得る日本人アーティスト、田名網敬一の初となる大規模回顧展です。田名網は幼少期に経験した戦争の記憶とその後に触れたアメリカ大衆文化からの影響が色濃く反映された、色彩鮮やかな作品で知られています。本展は当時の資料を含めて田名網が手掛けた膨大な作品を紹介することで、これまで包括的に捉えられることがなかった、その60年以上におよぶ活動を「記憶」というテーマのもとに改めて紐解こうとするものです。

[NACT] Symposium: Keiichi Tanaami at Present
An international symposium examining Keiichi Tanaami’s creative journey over the past 60 years.
To coincide with the grand opening of Keiichi Tanaami‘s first major retrospective exhibition, “Keiichi Tanaami: Adventures in Memory,” a symposium will be held with international professionals who have witnessed and studied Tanaami’s creative journey over the past 60 years.
Tanaami’s works are now in collections in major museums such as MoMA, the Art Institute of Chicago, and M+ (Hong Kong). With an increasing number of collaborations with fashion brands and musicians in Japan and abroad, Tanaami’s creativity has become widely recognized in recent years. While capturing the diverse aspects of this unique artist who has been active in both the design and fine art fields since winning a special selection award at the Japan Advertising Art Exhibition, held by the Japan Advertising Artists Club in 1957, this symposium will reveal the facts and reasons why Tanaami’s work is now being reevaluated and becoming popular among all generations.
The panelists include Hiroko Ikegami, pop art specialist and art historian, Professor at The Graduate School of Humanities, Osaka University; Tabaimo, artist and a former student of Tanaami’s at Kyoto University of Art and Design; Mariko Asabuki, novelist, who has published a short story about Tanaami this summer; and Julian Ross, Japanese experimental film researcher and assistant professor at Leiden University participating via on-line. This symposium will be an opportunity to reconsider the current Keiichi Tanaami.

This exhibition is the first major retrospective showcasing the internationally acclaimed artist Keiichi Tanaami. Tanaami is known for vivid, color-drenched works that intensely reflect his childhood memories of World War II and the impact of the American pop culture he encountered after the war. The exhibition presents an array of works by the astoundingly productive artist, including archival materials from past decades, tracing the entirety of Tanaami’s creative journey over more than 60 years. This unprecedented, comprehensive exploration of Tanaami’s oeuvre is organized around the theme of “memory.”
